Joburg cancels New Year's Eve celebrations to save money

The City of Johannesburg has cancelled its New Year's Eve celebrations to prioritize the needs of residents affected by the recent floods.
"We regret to inform our residents and partners, that this year's festive celebration is cancelled to enable us to channel all available resources and funding towards the repair of the city and to ensure that we are able to provide much-needed relief to those who have been severely affected," said Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse.
The city of gold has hosted several New Year's Eve parties over the years - which became a major feature of Joburg’s festive calendar.
“The celebrations formed part of job generation, local artists and creatives showcasing their talents,” added Phalatse.
Phalatse said in a statement released on Saturday, that the council wants to channel all the available resources to disaster-affected residents.
"We cannot, in good conscience, prioritize a year-end celebration over the well-being of our residents.”
This while Phalatse has encouraged residents to be responsible during festivities.
"We nonetheless encourage responsible festive celebrations as we all reflect on the year that was. As the city, will look forward to a 2023 that will bring a renewed hope and yield greater prosperity for all. Be safe and stay blessed!" she concluded.
