Emergency services entering Alexandra, the CBD, Cosmo City, Matholeville, Orange Farm and Doornkop will from now on be escorted by the police when responding to calls.

Johannesburg metro police chief David Tembe says officers will escort emergency services between 22:00 and 06:00, as those times have been identified as 'high-risk'.

There have been at least ten incidents where emergency services personnel have been assaulted, attacked or hijacked since the start of the year.

The most recent took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, when two emergency workers were robbed of their belongings in Dobsonville.
