Joburg emergency services on high alert amid predicted heavy rains
Updated | By Marius van der Walt
Emergency services in Johannesburg have warned residents to be alert with heavy rains and thunderstorms predicted for Gauteng on Saturday and Sunday.
Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says residents staying in low lying areas are cautioned to make plans before the rains come.
"The South African Weather Service has issued a watch for heavy rainfall on most parts of the city this morning going into Sunday. Emergency services would like to urge all the residents, especially in our low-lying areas, to be safe. Make sure they monitor the water levels and move to the higher ground when it is safe to do so.
"And we also want to cautioned motorists to drive safely and avoid all the flooded roads. Avoid taking a chance to cross flooded bridges so we can minimise incidents where vehicles might be swept away during this heavy rainfalls."
Mulaudzi says they will remain on high alert through the weekend.
"We will be monitoring all our seven regions of the city to make sure we are able to respond to any emergency that might occur as quickly as possible."
