We saw bodies lying on the floor, we were busy with firefighters giving them water so we had to pass through the bodies. So it was really bad and when I spoke to one of the firefighters he said it seems like there is still more bodies in the building," says Clifford Mabe.

The death toll has risen to at least 73.

The dead include seven children, with the youngest believed to have been under two years old.

Forty-three people have been injured, with some having suffered smoke inhalation as they escaped the hijacked building.

The aid organisation’s Mabe says it's a major disaster.

"The situation is very bad, I have been to the Boksburg tanker explosion, but this one is much worse."

The flames have since been put out.

Emergency services, who've been on the scene since the early hours of Thursday morning, are continuing with search and recovery efforts.
