Joburg to increase security for councillors in high-risk areas
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
The City of Johannesburg says measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of councillors in what is deemed to be high-risk areas.
The city will implement the measures following the death of Rand Water executive Teboho Joala, who was shot and killed during a community outreach event at the Zakariyya Park community hall on Monday.
Joala was shot in full view of about 75 children from at least five public schools in and around Lehae, south of Johannesburg.
A spokesperson for the Joburg Speaker of Council, Vusi Gumbi, says they provide councillors with security when there is a threat to their lives.
"The security of the Joburg councillors falls under the jurisdiction of JMPD. Therefore, this initiative will not come at an extra cost. Protection is given on a rolling basis, supply and demand.
"The executive assesses security measures of councillors based on, amongst others, high-risk areas that disgruntled residents influence as a result of poor service delivery."
The city says it will not let the city’s strained financial position put the lives of its staff at risk.
