The city’s MMC for Housing Mlungisi Mabaso officially conducted the ground breaking of the Jeppestown Social Housing Development on Tuesday.

Mabaso says the project’s mandate is to provide and manage social and affordable rental housing for the lower-income market.

It will take three financial years to complete all 1 336 units.

“It is a social housing project serving families whose total household income is between R3 500 and R15 000 a month. We are aware of people in the job market who do not qualify for RDP houses and for bond houses so those are the people who will qualify for this housing project.

“We are going to allocate the units on phases starting from phase one to the last phase and we will be doing engagement on communities to ensure that they seal ownership. But we are going to start the process of identifying beneficiaries because when the units get complete we need to start allocation to the people.”

He says the safety is tenants will be guaranteed.

“When the project is completed, there will be very high security we are going to ensure that our tenants are feeling very safe.

We are introducing a biometric system where we are going to introduce a fingerprint or a code for our tenants when they  walk in and out of the building.”
