Joburg Safety Campaign

The campaign was launched at the UJ's Sophiatown Residence. As part of the programme, martial art specialists will be teaching students the basics of self-defence.

This comes on the back of a spate of violent attacks on women in the province.

According to the City of Joburg's Michael Sun the police and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department are in support of the initiative, which aims to eradicate crime on campuses in the city.

Sun says the recent increase in violence against women has necesitated the initiative.

"Let's do something about safety by putting our money where our mouths are. We need to ensure to not only spread the word, but also equip members of the community with the necessary skills."

The city has also printed a pamphlet with some of the best safety tips.

"Thank you so much to the people of UJ, thank you for starting this innitivate. It is time that we started caring for each other," Sun says.

The department says plans are in place to increase JMPD while also working more closely with local policing forums.
