UN demands action to end violence against women
The head of the U.N. women's agency says it's unacceptable that up to 70 percent of women globally are likely to be beaten, raped, abused or mutilated in their lifetimes and is demanding action to end the violence.
Michelle Bachelet said the meeting of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women focused on combatting violence against women is historic because it is "the largest international meeting ever on ending violence against women." The two-week meeting opened Monday
Bachelet said strong political commitment and action is needed to halt the widespread abuses.
She pointed to the case of a 15-year-old Pakistani girl shot for defending the right to education and recent high-profile cases in India and South Africa of young women who were brutally raped and later died.
