Joburg says prepaid surcharge to remain unchanged
Updated | By Bulletin / Jacaranda FM
The City of Johannesburg has confirmed that the prepaid electricity surcharge will remain at R200 per month.

It comes amid reports of a proposed increase to R270.
Margaret Arnolds, Mayoral Committee for Finance member, told eNCA that while draft proposals exist, no changes have been approved.
The surcharge, introduced in July 2024, is meant to fund the maintenance of the city's electricity infrastructure.
“That has also been said through the media that every time you buy, you pay R230. That's not true," Arnolds said.
“I personally am a prepaid meter user. I pay R200 at the beginning of the month and my R30 VAT, but if I buy the next week, I do not pay the R200.”
