Thieves who helped themselves to copper cables worth an estimated R2 million had a key to the City of Johannesburg's data centre.
The City of Johannesburg has launched an investigation after copper cables worth an estimated R2 million were stolen from the city's data centre in Braamfontein.
The City's Group Forensic and Investigation Service has found evidence of a possible inside job after the incident, which occurred during the early hours of Saturday morning.
"There were no forced entries into the building," says the city's Luncky Sindane. "Someone who broke in had a key to the door and they broke into another door to get tools."
He also questions how the suspects new the specific room in question is where contractors stored their tools.
As a result, the city is investigating its contracts entered into with ICT suppliers.
Sindane believes the incident was meant to sabotage the city's efforts to establish its own "data centre and disaster recovery centre".
He adds, fortunately the suspects did not access the information and data stored at the facility.
The city is offering an award of R100 000 to any resident who comes forward with information that leads to the arrest of the suspects.
