Joburg swoops on hijacked buildings, scores arrested
Updated | By Neo Motloung
An estimated 272 undocumented immigrants have been arrested in Braamfontein in the Johannesburg CBD.
The arrests formed part of the city's crime prevention campaign which aims to clean up hijacked buildings.
The city's Lucky Sindane says the suspects have been handed over to the Department of Home Affairs for processing.
"We are currently engaging with home affairs, that all those in the city are taken back to their countries," says Sindane.
He warns that the city will in the coming weeks intensify raids on hijacked builds.
"Just to make sure so that we bring back the rule of law in the City of Johannesburg."
Sindane says 24 hijacked buildings have been handed back to their rightful owners.
The city says there are an estimated 300 hijacked buildings with 15 alleged property hijackers currently in custody.
