Joburg system will need time to recover from load-shedding, says City Power

City Power says it will take a couple of days for its system to recover following this week’s load-shedding.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena says City Power has been inundated with calls from residents who want to report faults and outages across Johannesburg.
A lack of capacity meant Eskom implemented stage 3 and 4 load-shedding from Sunday through to Thursday.

Mangena says the city’s system took a serious knock during the forced power outages.
"During load shedding implemented by Eskom, City Power suffered serious losses due to - among others - cable theft that was stolen by thieves taking advantages of the system being off. We've also had several of our mini-stations and transformers exploding due to the inrush current during restoration of power.”

He says ageing equipment is adding to the city’s power woes.
"We are currently dealing with about over 400 calls from customers which are from areas around Rosebank, Northcliff, Aukland Park and Glenvista, Southgate and Naturena. We are busy currently with all our resources trying to fix all these problems."
Mangena says the constant rain over the past few days has also hindered the restoration of power.
"We anticipate that it'll take at least two to three days to clear all the outstanding calls and get the system back on track. We really call on the communities to bear with us during this time and we apologise for the inconvenience this is causing to them."
