Joburg vows to fix fire engine shortage
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
Johannesburg is set to procure emergency vehicles - including fire trucks - which will see the 30 fire stations in the city each receiving a new fire engine.
This comes amid concerns from residents around the shortage of fire trucks in the city.
Mayor Herman Mashaba's spokesperson Luyanda Mfeka says due to the age and conditions of fire engine fleet, the vehicles are prone to breaking down.

Mfeka says taking into account maintenance and service schedules, there are currently seven operational fire engines with five more expected back within the coming week following repairs.
"Despite an initial setback in the process of procuring fire engines, the city is happy to report the fire engine replacement programme is currently in the process of being finalised and is expected to be concluded in the coming days.
"This will allow the city to place an order for 92 additional EMS vehicles including fire and rescue vehicles where delivery will commence in the coming weeks."
