Joburg Water to implement water reduction from Monday
Updated | By Masechaba Sefularo
Joburg Water has confirmed it would start implementing water reduction, between 9 pm and 5 am in high-usage areas as of next Monday.
The utility said this is one of several measures to reduce water losses and increase reserves.
Giving an update on the status of reservoirs following supply challenges in the Palmiet system, Joburg Water's Mzakhe Mtshweni said while the system is stable overall, water supply is constrained with reserves at 40% of daily demand.
“In those areas we will be implementing water reduction from 9 pm until 5 am,” he said, adding that it will be done on a scheduled basis.
“A schedule will be publicised and shared with the customer and the media, so that it’s known that your area, on this day will be receiving reduced supply.”
Joburg Water’s non-revenue water losses reached over 45%.
“We have a water conservation and water demand management strategy that is addressing the issue,” said Mtshweni. “These interventions are not immediate; they are short to medium-term because infrastructure has to be replaced and rehabilitated. These projects take anything from a year to three years.”
Other interventions include managed pressure reduction and aggressive by-law enforcement.
