Speaking at the utility's weekly briefing on Friday, the utility’s senior operations manager, Mzwakhe Mtshweni, said the system is currently sitting at 37.5%.

He said this is due to the interventions put in place to improve the system.

"The Kliprivier reservoir has improved from 19% to 33% in comparison to last week, the Glamfontein 1 and 2 moved from 46% to 49%, while the Klipfontein moved from  44% to 46%. So you can see there is some progress in terms of the level of the Rand Water system, especially those reservoirs that are critical in supplying the city of Joburg.”

At the same time, he warned that the Commando system is still recovering, which means that the water supply is yet to return to normal.

"Brixton Tower has been stable, meaning that the system is improving if you compare it with the system status last week. Hursthill 1 and 2 are the two reservoirs that still have low capacity. These two reservoirs are not at a level that would be able to supply water throughout the day," said Mtshweni.

Despite the improvement, the utility will continue with the meter closures between 9am and 4am.

"This is an intervention that will speed up the recovery of the Rand Water system. Within seven days, we have made an improvement of 1.5%, which is a huge improvement. The other intervention is throttling reservoirs supply so that we are able to build up the system recovery quite quicker so that we can get to the target that we have set for ourselves," he said.
