Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said 32-year-old Yunis Yusuf Mohamed was sentenced on December 4 for the 2014 murder of Elias Mohamed Adbimalik, 25.

Mohamed was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, 15 years for possession of an unlicenced firearm and 10 years for possession of ammunition. All the sentences would run concurrently.

“On December 3, 2014, at 7pm, the suspect shot a 25-year-old male, Elias Mohamed Adbimalik once in the upper body in Mayfair,” said Mbele.

Mbele said the incident occurred when Adbimalik was “playing a pool game with his friends when the suspect came in, and they had an argument”.

Mohamed shot Adbimalik with a Magnum revolver and the victim died while he was being taken to hospital.

“Suspect was on the run and was apprehended on the 5th of December 2014 at Burgersfort through the help of the community.”

Mbele said the firearm was found to have been reported stolen at Edenvale on 10 November 2014.

“Good conviction is the result of a diligent work done by an investigating officer,” Mbele said.

“We would also like to thank community members for being our eyes and ears in the fight against crime.”
