Johannesburg EMS cautions residents over heavy rain
Updated | By ANA
The Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) on Tuesday cautioned residents to be alert after heavy rainfall caused havoc, forcing evacuations due to flooding.
EMS spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said families from the Cleveland informal settlement had to evacuated after their shelters were destroyed by flooding overnight.
“The tents housing the Cleveland families were blown off by wind and flooded, thus they had to be evacuated. Suitable accommodation is being sought for them. We advise people, especially children, to avoid low lying areas and storm water drains as it could be dangerous due to the downpour,” said Mulaudzi.
“Motorists should also avoid trying to cross flooded streams.”
The families were accommodated at the shelters after their shacks in Cleveland burnt down over the weekend. Several informal settlements were partly flooded across the city, he said.
Mulaudzi said emergency services were on alert as more rainfall was predicted for the rest of the week. - ANA
