JSC sitting to go ahead on Monday

The Judicial Service Commission interviews will continue as scheduled on Monday without the presence of the MK Party’s deputy president, John Hlophe.

The High Court in Johannesburg on Saturday dismissed an eleventh-hour bid by the MK Party and its parliamentary leader, impeached former judge president John Hlophe, to block the interviews.
A full bench of the Western Cape High Court last week barred Hlophe from participating in any JSC proceedings.
The interviews are set to get underway tomorrow and will see a total of 55 candidates vying for 27 vacancies, including Hlophe's former post.
The MK Party applied to nullify what it called JSC's “irrational decision” not to postpone tomorrow’s interview. In a statement, it expressed its disappointment and vowed to take legal action regarding the matter at hand.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance has welcomed the ruling, describing it as a win for South Africa’s judiciary.
The DA believes the court’s decision to reject the MK Party’s attempts to delay the JSC interviews has ensured that the process of selecting new judges can proceed without interference from individuals who have been found guilty of gross misconduct.
