Judgment reserved in SAA retrenchment matter
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
The Labour Court has reserved judgement in the urgent interdict sought by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and the South African Cabin Crew Association (SACCA) against South African Airways (SAA).
The two labour unions approached the Labour Court in Johannesburg on Thursday to challenge the planned retrenchments at SAA.
Numsa and SACCA want the Section 189 notices issued to employees declared unlawful until they have been made privy to airline’s business rescue plan.
Numsa spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says they hope for the matter to be resolved soon.
“Our attorneys presented our argument before the judge today and judgement was reserved.
“We understand that the court does take cognisance of the fact that the clock is ticking and we need a decision soon so we are expecting a decision as soon as possible.”

The once-off movement of people, who were not at their places of residence or work when the lockdown commenced, will end at midnight on Thursday. A new regulation was also issued on Monday that allows long-distance travellers to bypass the Covid-19 curfew.
Hlubi-Majola says they will continue engagements with the Department of Public Enterprises on a way forward.
“We hope that our deliberations will result in the turn around of these organisations and it will result in us being able to save as many jobs as we can.”
