The Gauteng Department of Health on Wednesday warned that the Kalafong Hospital is struggling with water shortages due to the City of Tshwane’s supply challenges.

The metro has implemented Level 1 water restrictions in an attempt to manage consumption.

Rand Water, the provincial water board, is experiencing strained levels of consumption, forcing municipalities to implement billing adjustments to penalise user behaviour.

The department’s spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba, said Kalafong Hospital has been experiencing an unstable water supply since last week.

However, the facility’s borehole can only supply the low-lying areas.

Modiba said the city has been providing the hospital with water tankers daily.

“However, these, together with the borehole, are still insufficient to enable optimal patient care at the hospital. Due to the water shortage, outpatient appointments are being rescheduled, and elective procedures are limited until further notice.”

“Emergency and maternity cases will be diverted to nearby facilities, and the public is advised to seek non-emergency care at alternative healthcare facilities.”
