Karabo Mokoena's alleged killer applies for bail
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Sandile Mantsoe’s bail application is underway in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court.
Mantsoe is facing charges of premeditated murder and defeating the ends of justice for the alleged killing of his girlfriend Karabo Mokoena.
Mokoena went missing on the 28th of April. Her burnt body was later discovered in a veld in Lyndhurst.
Both the National Prosecuting Authority and Mantsoe’s defence objected to the bail proceedings being broadcast live.
Magistrate Karel Labuschagne ruled in favour of both parties, barring the media from broadcasting the proceedings live.
“This is a bail application and not a trial. The court must weigh up the rights of freedom and expression and the rights of the accused. It would not be in the interest of justice to record or print any of the bail proceedings at this stage.”
The media has also been barred from broadcasting or printing Mantsoe’s affidavit.
The media will however be able to broadcast judgement in the bail application.
