Karpowership granted 3 generation licences at SA ports
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has approved three generation licences for Karpowership SA.
This includes licences for ports at Saldanha Bay, Coega and Richards Bay.
A Karpowership SA spokesperson confirmed the latest developments on Tuesday.
“We have confirmation from NERSA on generation licenses and are very happy to be moving forward,” the spokesperson said.
This comes despite some public outcry and red tape.
Earlier this year, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment denied Karpowership permission to provide floating gas-fired power ships at the three ports.
The department turned down the application for environmental authorisation to approve electricity by the energy company.
Karpowership will still have to iron out these issues before moving forward.
