Parts of Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, were still without power on Monday morning after a cable was damaged, Ekurhuleni municipality said.
Teams would require another day to repair the damaged 66kV oil-filled feeder cable, spokesman Sam Modiba said in a statement. Parts of Van Riebeeck Park, Terenure, Birch Acres and Edleen have had no electricity since around noon on Sunday, when a contractor damaged the cable while doing work at a road crossing. The nature of the cable meant it took longer to repair than standard cables.
Modiba said it was hoped that power would be switched back on during Tuesday afternoon. Ekurhuleni municipality apologised for the inconvenience the outage has caused and reminded residents to treat the network and their appliances as electrically live at all times. Motorists would treat all affected intersections as four-way stops. "Should the power not be restored within the stated time...[Ekurhuleni municipality] assures that it will continue with work until all areas are once again electrified," he said.
