Kenya police fire tear gas at university
Updated | By Catrine Malan
Police in Kenya are firing tear gas into university buildings where protesting students had taken cover.

University students on Tuesday carried out demonstrations in downtown Nairobi over a proposed increase in student fees.
But the demonstrations turned confrontational after police began firing tear gas. Many downtown businesses were closed and downtown streets were empty of cars.
An Associated Press photographer documenting the confrontations said that police later chased students inside university classrooms and fired tear gas into those classrooms with students inside.
The University of Nairobi sits just across the street from the downtown business district.
A police spokesman did not answer a telephone call seeking comment.
