Khawe, who has since taken a leave of absence, has denied that he had abused his wife, Nthabeleng Khawe.

The top politician allegedly abused her physically, emotionally, and financially.

Nthabeleng told a Sunday newspaper that Khawe had “turned her into a punching bag” – allegations which he vehemently denies.

A special provincial executive committee meeting was held on Tuesday to probe the claims against Khawe.

Whole no case has been opened nor charges laid, Khawe has opted to take a leave of absence while the party investigates.

Khawe has subjected himself to a probe by the party’s national integrity committee.

“Jacob felt that for as long as he is still in the office, the name, brand, and image of the ANC will be tainted,” says spokesperson Ben Modise.

Nthabeleng is set to file for a divorce and has documented the alleged abuse on social media, which is believed to have started after they got married in 2020.

Modise says the party allegations of gender-based violence against Khawe are “viewed in a very serious light”.

“Everything will come out during the national integrity committee’s deliberations. They will find out if there is another issue that is probably a dirty hand at play or if it is a genuine isolated issue. For now, we don’t know.”

The deputy provincial secretary, Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko, will be the acting provincial secretary while the probe is underway.
