Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has expressed sadness and outrage following the alleged shooting at Walter Sisulu University in Mthata, Eastern Cape that claimed the life of a student and left two others injured.

The alleged incident took place when students were allegedly protesting over unresolved demands regarding residential issues on campus.
Students had allegedly torched a vehicle near a student accommodation when the residence manager opened fire.
Makaneta said the shooting was a reminder that South Africa has failed to provide the students with the safe and secure environment they deserve.
"Universities should be safe havens for students, places where they can pursue their academic goals without fear of violence or harm.We condemn this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible terms. The use of firearms on campus is unacceptable and has no place in our society."
He called for immediate action from the South African Police Service (SAPS) to apprehend the perpetrator and ensure that justice is served.
Makaneta added that the safety and security of students must be a top priority.
"We call on the university administration to take concrete steps to prevent future incidents, including reviewing and strengthening their security protocols.
He said he stands in solidarity with the affected students, staff, and families affected by this tragedy.
