Kliptown protest brings train service to a standstill
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Metrorail has halted its train service between Midvaal and Johannesburg after protesters blocked the lines in Kliptown, Soweto.
Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng says the disruption will affect commuters travelling between Vereeniging and Johannesburg.
"Subsequent to the safety risks that we have evaluated, we have stopped the service so that we don't put our drivers or commuters at risk," Mokokeng said.
She said protesters were pelting the trains with stones.
"I think it is a community related service delivery issue that has got nothing to do with Metrorail at all."
