Residents are now being urged to reduce their water consumption.

The Garden Route town has water for no more than a month, officials say.

Knysna mayor Eleanor Bouw-Spies warns that Knysna is in a real crisis.

"Our Akkerkloof Dam at 30% which equates to 19 days of water. As per our latest water report consumption is high and in Knysna is at 11.79 mega litres a day. Our target is 10 mega litres a day," she says.

The water shortage comes amid the ongoing drought.

Water resources in Knysna were also placed under severe pressure following the wild fires which swept across the town in June.
