Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa has congratulated Dricus du Plessis on being crowned South Africa’s first United Fighting Championship (UFC) champion.
Du Plessis defeated American Sean Strickland in Canada on Sunday to win the UFC Middleweight title.
In a statement, Kodwa congratulated the record-breaking champion.
“Dricus du Plessis has flown the South African flag high with his performances in the United Fighting Championship. I congratulate him on the remarkable achievement of being the first South African to be crowned UFC Champion”.
“It has been particularly special to see South Africans unite in their diversity to support their own, as Du Plessis made history”.
Thousands of proud South Africans, including former Olympian Ryk Neethling, former Proteas batting star AB de Villiers and SA rugby director Rassie Erasmus, all took to social media to congratulate the country’s new champion.
