Krecjir sentenced to 35 years
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Controvertial Czech criminal Radovan Krejcir has been sentenced to 35 years behind bars in the South Gauteng High Court on Tuesday.
This after Krejcir and his 5 co-accused were found guilty on charges of drug dealing, attempted murder and kidnapping in August 2015.
Judge Colin Lamont said in his sentence that the crimes are of a serious nature.
While delivering his verdict, Judge Lamont said three factors would be taken into consideration: the accused's personal state, the nature of the crime and the impact on society.
Lamont said it was clear Krejcir was the mastermind and there was no doubt he was going to attempt to distribute the drugs overseas.
With regards to the three convicted officers, Lamont said they misused and abused their positions and needed to be punished.
State prosecutor Louis Mashiyane tore into the three convicted Hawks officers, comparing them to Judas.
Mashiyane told the court that the officers were part of an elite crime fighting unit and yet they betrayed their employer.
He added that the accused were part of a well organised syndicate and its a fact that not all members have been arrested.
While the accused can be rehabilitated, Judge Lamont said it's difficult to rehabilitate someone who doesn't accept that they have committed a crime.
All six of the accused have indicated they will appeal their convictions and sentence on Wednesday.
Here's the breakdown of sentences:
Accused 1 - Radovan Krejcir: 35years in total (25 years for intent to deal in drugs, 15 years for kidnapping and 15 years for attempted murder. 10 years each of the kidnapping and attempted murder charge will run concurrently)
Accused 2 - Desai Luphondo: 35 years
Accused 3 - Samuel Maropeng (Hawks officer): 15 years
Accused 4 - Jeff Nthoroane (Hawks officer): 15 years
Accused 5 - Siboniso Miya: 15 years
Accused 6 - Jan Mofokeng (Hawks officer): 15 years
