KZN ANC rejects legal amendment to allow for polyandry

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal is rejecting the proposed Marriage Act, which allowed for polyandry to be legalised in South Africa.
The party announced its stance on Tuesday during a briefing in Durban.
A policy document was published by the Department of Home Affairs earlier this month to create a new Marriage Act that will allow consenting adults in the country to conclude recognised and legal marriages, including polyandric marriages.
This legislation is currently open for public comment and could allow for a woman to have more than one husband.
"The PEC is convinced that there are no rational or cultural imperatives intended by the introduction practice of polyandry as one aspect of (the) marriage bill that is currently under discussion," said ANC KZN Secretary, Mndumiseni Ntuli.
"It is perfectly clear that the current proposal particularly it relates to polyandry, is without any concrete and convincing substance to be supported by the African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal."
Ntuli added that this will not address women's inequality in society.
"The PEC believes that at the heart of this national discourse on the proposed marriage bill must be a commitment to improve our current conditions or redress the imbalances of the past,” said Ntuli.
"It is neither a contribution in the fight against patriarchy nor demonstrating convincingly any basis to improve women in our country."
