KZN Education loses R4m in failed sanitary pad drive

The Kwazulu-Natal Department of Education lost over R4 million after a sanitary towel project from three years ago failed to materialise.
MEC Kwazi Mshengu confirmed the failed project at a media briefing on Thursday.
He was releasing a forensic report on tender fraud in the department.
"A survey conducted by the investigators it was revealed that over 2 million sanitary packs were not needed. A site visit conducted in each district offices confirmed a surplus of stock being stored in various places.
"And lastly that in quantifying a loss in relation to sanitary pads distributed, it was established that 388 680 packs were not delivered to district and head offices, a further 64 269 packs were not delivered to schools, these packs are valued at a cost of 4.3 million.”
Three officials have been suspended pending the outcomes of a disciplinary hearing.
