KZN Education rolls out initiative to keep young girls at school
Updated | By Puletso Petersen
Schoolgirls from disadvantaged communities will now have access to sanitary towels - thanks to a R50-million investment by the KZN Education Department.
The department has piloted a project that will provide sanitary pads to learners in Grade 4 to 12 - in almost 3000 selected Quintile 1-4 schools across the province.
The investment follows a recent report which revealed that millions of South African schoolgirls are unable to attend school every month - as a result of limited or no access to sanitary towels.

Education's Muzi Mahlambi says they've received positive feedback regarding the programme.
"We are happy that we are at the stage where we are able to distribute the sanitary towels to all needy girls. As the Department, we have put aside a sum of R50-million for the current financial year so that we are able to provide these kinds of services," he said.
