KZN floods: Province marks month since rains began
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Wednesday marks one month since heavy rains begin falling in KwaZulu-Natal, triggering devastating floods and landslides.
The death toll stands at 435 people, while many homes and some major roads were washed away. It's also been torture for the families of 63 people still missing who are unable to find closure.
Thandiwe Duka from Reservoir Hills, west of Durban, says she hasn't been able to lay her eight-year-old daughter Simokuhle to rest yet.
"It was late and we were sleeping and it was raining heavily and it flooded all the houses. We tried to help her but we couldn't, there was water coming in," she explains.
An emotional Thandiwe says searches have been carried out but there's still no sign of her child.
She feels heavy machinery needs to be brought to dig under the rubble of their collapsed home
"They came and searched but they didn't find anything, we need something big because we suspect Simokuhle is still there."
"A lot of things are there, it's terrible I can't even sleep. I just want to see even the bones so I can rest."
