A 36-year-old man from Verulam in KZN has been arrested for
allegedly raping his stepdaughter at their home, north of Durban.
Police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele says the man was assaulted after a neighbour allegedly saw him beating the 10-year-old.
Mbhele says the little girl's mother died 5 years ago.
"A neighbour came to the victim's home and intervened. The stepfather then chased the girl and the neighbour away. The neighbour then took the child to her house. While she was talking to her, the child revealed that she was raped by her stepfather a week ago."
Mbhele said the child may have been raped repeatedly.
The Department of Social Development has since been called in to assist the girl.
"Social workers are busy with the child. After examining her, she will be taken to a place of safety," Mbhele said.
Police are also investigating claims the child had been held captive by the man.
