A 60-year-old man was arrested in Nongoma on Tuesday for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Colonel Jay Naicker said police received a tip-off about the illegal firearm.
"Police found the suspect in his house and during a search of the premises he was found in possession of a .38 revolver with three live rounds."
He said the firearm would be sent for ballistic investigations to establish if it was used in any crimes in the country.
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni said one of the police focus areas during the festive season was to seize illegal firearms.
"It is disappointing that such an elderly person who should be setting an example to the younger generation was found in possession of such illegal firearms and ammunition," she said.
