Four suspected poachers were arrested on Thursday in Pongola in KwaZulu Natal, said the Hawks.
"The poachers were disturbed by the weather and could not carry out their plan," said Captain Paul Ramaloko.
Two are Mozambican nationals while the other two are South African. They were arrested at the Pongola Game Reserve.
The men were found in possession of a high calibre hunting rifle, rounds of ammunitions and two silencers.
"The search for more suspected poachers in the area is under way," said Ramaloko.
The men are expected to appear at the Ubombo Magistrate's Court on Friday.
They are facing charges of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
"The firearm is being taken for ballistic testing to see if it is not linked to any other rhino poaching cases."
