The police officers will appear in the Greytown Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

They are facing charges of murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesman Moses Dlamini says the officers, from the Greytown police station, were arrested on Sunday.

The police officers belong to the Greytown Crime Intelligence Unit had arrested three men on August 2 for interrogation relating to a murder case.

"The three suspects were detained, tortured and assaulted in the Muden SAPS cells until one of the suspects succumbed to his injuries and died," says Dlamini.

He adds the police did not report the incident, however, orchestrated a plan to dispose of the deceased’s body by dumping it at a nearby bush.

"The family members noticed that the deceased had not returned home, they then reported him at the same police station. But they were told that he was released on the same day."

Dlamini says a family member approached IPID to investigate the disappearance of the 47-year-old man.

He adds the investigative body worked around the clock and arrested the officers at the weekend.

Dlamini says one of the suspects has since committed suicide.
