KZN police detective, motorist killed in hijacking

A 55-year-old police detective and a motorist were killed in attempted hijacking on the M14 in Umkomaas, KwaZulu-Natal.
The detective was ambushed by a group of hijackers in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili says four suspects are on the run.
"It is reported that the member was driving on the M14 when he slowed down on a speed hump. A vehicle behind him with four occupants started to open fire at his vehicle and the suspects then fled the scene.”

Muridili says the suspects, who were driving recklessly, were spotted by police patrol.
"The members on patrol from Umkomaas station spotted the vehicle speeding, and it looked suspicious to them and followed the vehicle.
"It is reported further that the vehicle bumped into a truck on the road and the suspects got out of the vehicle and hijacked and fatally wounded a 33-year-old man who was on the road at the time."
