He was not willing to elaborate only saying: "It is confirmed. It is not something I need to talk about."

Mchunu has been under pressure since Sihle Zikalala replaced him as ANC chair in the province last year.

Divisions in the ANC in the province have been visible since Mchunu lost his position.

Speculation was rife on Friday evening that he had been given until Monday to resign.

The ANC however remained mum on the issue, refusing to neither confirm nor deny allegations.

Meanwhile, the ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal claim Mchunu will be redeployed to the National Assembly.

It says Mchunu will serve as an MP, in place of former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene.

Provincial ANCYL secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo says: “Mchunu is indeed going to the National Assembly. The ANC has agreed with us.”

He confirms the ANCYL’s preferred candidate for the position of premier is Willies Mchunu. “We have no doubt he will be elected.”

Earlier on Monday, the ANC's head of elections Nomvula Mokonyane expressed her deep concern about the political developments in KZN.

Speaking at an ANC election manifesto briefing in Johannesburg, Mokonyane said power struggles in the province could have a negative effect on the party come local government elections.

"Anything that has the potential to divide supporters of the ANC worries me," she said. "Any differences I may have with another comrade which can cause harm on the election outcome concerns me."
