KZN records over 5 000 new Covid-19 cases

KwaZulu-Natal – traditionally one of the top holiday destinations during the festive season has recorded 5 134 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, making it the province with the second-highest daily infections.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported that there were 20 713 new Covid-19 cases reported on Friday across South Africa, as the country officially moves into the holiday period.
The latest increase represents a 30.4% positivity rate.
Gauteng remains the province with the highest number of infections – with 5 850 new infections recorded on Friday.
"The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (28%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (25%). Western Cape accounted for 18%; Eastern Cape accounted for 8%; Free State accounted for 6%; Mpumalanga accounted for 5%; North West accounted for 4%; Limpopo accounted for 3%; and Northern Cape accounted for 2% of today’s new cases,” said the NICD in a statement.
An additional 35 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 90 297.
There has been an increase of 429 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours with 7 932 people currently receiving treatment in both private and public health facilities.
On the vaccine front, 69 577 vaccines were administered in the last 24 hours.
