KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube says they expect the number to rise.

She visited Magwaveni in Tongaat after a tornado ripped through the area on Monday afternoon.

Among those who have died is a primary school teacher in Tongaat.

The 39-year-old woman was killed in a structural collapse at her home.

A close friend, Kanthy Naidoo, said she was devastated when she heard the news.

She says her son had helped the victim after the recent floods.

"Recently, when they had floods in Tongaat, he also assisted in cleaning up that very same home where she passed on now. She renovated and refurbished the home. It is devastating for all of us to hear about it."

Dube-Ncube said the damage was not limited to the coastal areas of the province.

"We have about 14 (people) that are hospitalised in and around eThekwini. Our teams are still busy with the assessments. The damage is quite huge.

“The areas that are affected have not only been coastal areas, the inner part of the province has also been affected badly."
