KZN teacher injured in attack by school’s kitchen staff

The National Teachers’ Union has expressed concerned at what it says is a growing number of incidents of ill-discipline and unruly behaviour at schools.
This comes after a teacher at a school in KZN was attacked by kitchen staff who hit her on the head with a stick on Friday.
Earlier, the principal had a heated argument with the victim regarding one-day salary deduction for an unapproved sick leave application.
The victim was then confronted by the food handler alleging that “she is harassing her brother (principal)”.
NATU President Sibusiso Malinga says the incident took place in full view of pupils and teachers.
“We are concerned about the rising incidents of violence in schools. We thus call on authorities to commission an investigation to establish the root cause of this catastrophic incident. We must send a clear message that violence cannot be tolerated in our schools”.
“We further urge the Department of Education to address the issue of school safety and appoint trained security personnel. NATU condemns violence in schools with the contempt it deserves. Bullying and onslaught has no space in our schools. We want to re-affirm our call for creation of safe schools and plead with the Department of Education to hire competent security staff for the safety of our teachers and learners.”
A case of assault was opened at Tongaat Police Station and two suspects were arrested on Saturday.
The suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday on charges of assault.
