KZN train services suspended indefinitely
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has suspended its operations indefinitely in KwaZulu-Natal.
Prasa's provincial spokesperson Zama Nomnganga says this comes after violent protests in uMlazi train station, near Durban.
He says the suspension is the culmination of several incidents, including the hijacking of trains and drivers being assaulted.
"Now we have decided for the safety of our staff and our crew, let us suspend the services until further notice," says Nomnganga.
Nomnganga says the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, had no choice but to intervene in an attempt to remedy the situation.
He believes the protest started over train delays and cancellation in the region.
"Our infrastructure is old, and our fleet is old too. It is bound to have a breakdown."
