The 15 people were alleged to be part of a group of about 200 local residents who assaulted and torched the men on Tuesday, said Captain Thulani Zwane.

The men, aged 25 and 28, were believed to be involved in house robberies in the area last month.

"When the police arrived at the scene two dead bodies were found lying on the road with assault and burn wounds," said Zwane.

Fourteen people, aged between 21 and 58, were arrested on Wednesday for setting the men alight, while a 27-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

"He was found in possession of a home-made shotgun with two live rounds of ammunition," said Zwane.

"A panga and a knife believed to be used in the murder were also found in the area."

The 15 would appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court soon.
