KZN, Western Cape record an increase in new Covid-19 cases

KwaZulu-Natal  and the Western Cape, the provinces experiencing an influx of holidaymakers - are also now experiencing an increase in new Covid-19 cases.

According to the latest statistics by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), KZN accounted for 23% of the total new infections recorded on Thursday, while the Western Cape province accounted for  19% of the national total.


That while the daily number of new infections has seen another slight decrease in Gauteng which was the epicentre of the new outbreak and the fourth wave.


Gauteng on Thursday accounted for 27% of the country’s total new infections.


KwaZulu-Natal recorded 5 821 new cases, the Western Cape 4 599 and Gauteng 5 744 new infections over the last  24-hour reporting cycle.


The report by the NICD shows there were a total of 24 785 new Covid-19 cases, out of the 80 304 tests conducted, bringing the country to a positivity rate of 30.9% for the day.


An additional 36 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, with the national total of fatalities rising to 90 262.


There has been an increase of 347 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours and South Africa now has 7 614 people receiving treatment for Covid-19 related complications in both private and public health facilities.


On the vaccine front, 12 558 vaccines were administered in the last 24 hours.
