Police officers were in Madlala informal settlement raiding the area for looted goods from the recent unrest.

It is alleged the community members mobilised each other and blocked the exit points with rocks before slashing the tyres of the police vehicle.

It is also alleged they then attacked the officers who retaliated by firing warning shots to disperse the hostile crowd.

One of the shots is believed to have struck the 33-year-old.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was called in to investigate.

“The woman was later found dead behind one of the shacks metres away from the road where the police were stationed with gunshot wound in her body,” said IPID spokesperson Ndileka Cola.

“IPID continues with the investigation process of this incident.”
