Labour court demands explanation from police minister

Judge Anton Steenkamp ruled in favour of labour union Solidarity and whistleblower Colonel Kobus Roos with regard to the SA Police Service having failed to redeploy Roos in a similar position.

 

The union and Roos approached the court as they felt the SAPS had failed to abide by a previous court ruling to reinstate Roos to a crime intelligence position.

 

Roos, who has worked for the police for 26 years, was originally demoted by ex-crime intelligence boss Richard Mdluli, after he exposed corruption in the crime intelligence unit.

 

Mdluli removed Roos from his position as head of internal audit and placed him in the inspectorate and evaluation division of the union -- a post the union said was redundant.

 

In April, the Labour Court ordered the police to redeploy Roos to a similar position to the one he had before his demotion.

 

In granting the order, Steenkamp said Police Minister Nathi Nhleko and commissioner Riah Phiyega had to appear in court on

 

November 28 to say why the order should not be made final and show how they had complied with the previous order.
