A local scientist says the Lambda variant of Covid-19, which was first detected in Peru, has not yet been found in South Africa.
Professor Tulio de Oliveira has confirmed that up until now they have not detected the Lambda variant in the country.
The molecular biologist also tweeted that the Delta variant is widespread in many provinces and that scientists are seeing increasing genomic surveillance as the country battles the third wave.
He says they made this information known in a presentation to government on the spread of Delta in South Africa and the Lambda variant.
It's been reported that the Lambda variant, which's highly contagious and spreading in over 20 countries, is cause for concern.
