Lamola: Stellenbosch incident 'akin to urinating on Constitution’

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola has described last week’s incident at Stellenbosch University as "akin to urinating on the country’s Constitution".

This as the country remains split down the middle over a case of racism at the prestigious university in the Western Cape.

Theuns du Toit was suspended after a video surfaced on social media, showing the first-year student urinating on the books and laptop of a black student at Huis Marais.

While the university is yet to decide his fate, senior government officials have added to their voices to the backlash.

This includes Lamola, who addressed the South African National Conference to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the third World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance on Monday.

“The incident at Stellenbosch is one too many in recent months," Lamola said.

“It is akin to urinating on the Constitution itself because it is done on the year we are celebrating the 25th year of the Constitution. These kinds of barbaric incidents must be condemned and must be dealt with accordingly,” said Lamola.

Adding to du Toit’s woes, Babalo Ndwayana opened a criminal charges against him for malicious damage to property and crimen injuria.

“Justice must prevail,” Lamola added.

Lamola urged parents to instil a spirit of tolerance in their children.

“There’s no reason for a 21year-old to be accused of racism in this day and age. This points to the upbringing of the child because this child was born post-democracy.”

Lamola also slammed the spike in cases of xenophobia across the country.
